International Markets - It's time for Logan City to go Global!

25

The Logan Office of Economic Development (LOED) has been actively generating awareness in international markets in the areas of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and export development for Logan City companies.

LOED partners with Austrade, Invest Australia, Australian Institute of Export (AIEx) and Trade and Investment Queensland, and also regularly engages with Trade Commissioners and Economic Development agencies based overseas to identify investment attraction and export related opportunities.

When most local companies hear the word export, images conjured up usually involve the latest billion dollar mining deal in China or a mega million dollar infrastructure project won by a consultancy in either India or the UAE.  LOED recognises these export successes but realises that the vast majority of businesses in Logan are SMEs - begging the questions: Export - What's in it for us? and ..Why even consider export?  Three of Queensland's top non-mining exporters call Logan home, they are SnapFresh, Morris Corporation and Teys Bros.  However information sourced from Austrade and Trade and Invest Queensland indicates that more than 500 companies in Logan are currently exporting or have made enquiries into exporting the past two years.

Guided by industry feedback and trade consultants, LOED is committed and focused on developing relationships with key stakeholders that can assist Logan City based companies to enter into export markets.  Factors that need to be considered when entering export markets include: established product in Australia; potential language barriers; trade history with Australia; cost of entry; proximity; legal; insurance and government systems; competition and market acceptance; and standard trading terms to name but a few.  Aside from the aforementioned China, Indian and Middle East markets, Logan exporters may want to consider alternative markets including: New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Canada, United Kingdom, and the United States, because of these factors when looking at export markets.

LOED is facilitating "Export hub" group for Logan based companies that currently export or are looking to enter the export space. The main driver for LOED is to reduce the risk for business into targeted export markets and to encourage more export activity and outcomes out of Logan, with the goal of the hub for Logan businesses to:

  • Utilise the services of trade organisations and trade specialists;
  • Establish a platform for exporters of all sizes to come together to discuss trade issues, opportunities, contacts; Identify creative ways to export - direct, licensing, markets within markets, distribution strategies;
  • Provide an opportunity for exporters to identify shared linkages, overseas markets, customers and distributors amongst each other; Minimise export risk;
  • Receive direct training in export related areas such as export insurance, Export Market Development Grants (EMDG), tradeshow and presenting to international markets; and
  • Enable connections via physical seminars/workshops, shared teleconferencing activities and virtual social networking through social networking sites such as LinkedIn.

The Logan City Export Hub program entails:

  • Dedicated resource to assist Logan exporters with daily administration requests; Partnership with Australian Institute of Export (AIEx) and collaboration of the programs and monthly events they offer to assist exporters;
  • Promotion of the Getting into Export program by Trade and Invest Queensland; Utilising services of Trade advisor in Department of employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) office in Springwood;
  • Promotion of the services, events and trade missions of Austrade and Trade and Investment Queensland; Regular engagement with trade commissioners/officers of Austrade and Trade Queensland;
  • Promotion of Queensland Export Week 18-22 October 2010;
