Griffith Professional Mentoring – Make a difference
The Griffith Industry Mentoring Program is a program for inducting soon-to-be graduates from Griffith University into professional practice. This year's program will involve 400 participants from a range of professional fields. The program, conducted during semester two each year, from August to October, matches undergraduate students (other than first years) and postgraduates from a range of disciplines with professionals in the same career field.
Many professionals may be keen to pass on the insights gained over their years of experience to students in the early stages of their professional lives. Mentors in the program assist students to:
- Gain a better understanding of relevant career paths.
- Build professional networks with key people in their field.
- Develop a clearer understanding of organisational structures/culture.
- Learn about the day-to-day requirements of a professional work role.
- Enhance their 'job readiness' skills (i.e. communication, teamwork).
While the program supports students in developing their careers and reviewing employment options beyond graduation, mentors regularly confirm the benefits they derive from their participation. These include:
- Personal satisfaction from being able to guide and support future members of their profession
- The opportunity to share their professional expertise
- Being able to review the latest trends in their profession
- Networking with other mentors
- The opportunity to establish/maintain personal and organisational links with the university
Special features of the program are two major networking functions: a breakfast launch and a concluding cocktail function both held at locations in the CBD. Other than at these functions, mentors and students meet for a minimum of six one-hour appointments and are in touch by other means at least once a week.
Professionals interested in the joining as a mentor do not require any special training, however a briefing session is offered prior to commencement.
