Logan Industry Skills Development Project: making and maintaining the links with business

23

The Logan Office of Economic Development has a new project underway - "Logan Industry Skills Development". The project will build relationships between Logan businesses and employment and training networks with the aim of getting more residents employed locally.

As part of the city's economic strategy, Skills and Workforce development is a key component. The Industry and Skills Development Project will establish partnerships and provide linkages on education and training needs to develop a strong, local workforce.

So how will we go about this? Business, industry and employers need to engage with us. We need to hear what the business community are saying are their requirements for finding the right employee, to retain and develop their staff and to grow and develop their business.

The Local Industry and Skills Project will work to establish and maintain collaborative partnerships and dialogue with local employers, industry bodies, education and training providers, job services providers and Government Departments, to develop and meet the employment needs in Logan City.

As part of this project, scoping of future skill needs, gaps, trends and opportunities will be identified for the Logan area to encourage and grow local, sustainable employment opportunities for Logan employees and Logan employers.

Workforce development needs to be about nurturing, growing and establishing a strong, innovative, local workforce. Young people need to be equipped with the tools, knowledge and training to start their working lives. Existing workers need support, training and opportunities to expand their working lives. Older workers offer experience, constancy and maturity to the workforce. New Australians and migrants arrive with a willingness and eagerness to work. The modern day workforce is varied and the workplace needs to be able to adapt. The challenge is for workplaces and people to keep up with the changes and expectations in a hard or soft labour market. How your business adapts or learns is our business.
